Twinity - Be yourself

Dear Twinizens,

As you know, Twinity is designed to be a mash-up of the real and virtual worlds. Part of this is the upcoming introduction of outdoor environments. Another part of this is you. Twinity is a place where you can be you. Just as the most popular social networks and community sites do, Twinity embraces the use of real names. For that reason, Twinity will move to a naming scheme based on first name and last name instead of nicknames. It’s a great way for you to bring your friends, your networks and your reputation into a virtual world. This lets you have a seamless transition and integration with the real world. You can already start today, searching for your friends who may already be Twinizens, and letting your friends find you when they join Twinity.

Your name is a big part of who you are, and Twinity wants you to be you.

We will introduce the names update on Thursday, April 24, 2008. At the same time, we will roll out  privacy controls with the next few releases. This week’s release will allow you to choose if you want to display your last name, your birthday, and your online status.

We will be available to discuss this at this week’s Twinity Lounge. Of course, you can always contact me personally or contact our support team via our forums, in-world feedback or via our email address support (at) twinity dot com.

Thanks,
jeremy

Do you really want to completely suppress nicknames ? Where in the real world do people publicly display their real name permanently above their head ?

@Wangxiang Tuxing: where in “physical reality” (what you call “real world”) do people display nicknames over their heads? ;) At conferences you often wear a badge with your name but it certainly would look kinda funny to wear a badge 24/7 and everywhere …

OTOH - and to be honest - I am not sure, that I would be SUCH a good idea to force users of an online platform to use the names written down in their passports. Not even the networks, which are focused on networking do this on the web (with the exception of professional networks like LinkedIn and Xing)

When I am entering a virtual world (or another online platform) for fun I don’t always want to reveal my physical identity - for a lot of different reasons. Not to be mistaken: I usually do this - but I wouldn’t want to forced to do this.

I hope Twinity is not moving into that direction.

Markus, I totally agree with you except for one thing… If we were forced to wear a badge with our real name 24/7 in the real world, it would not be fun at all, it would simply be horrible…
